Wanted: Computer Nerd

I need a new computer. Well, just the tower. I'm fairly content with everything else.

I've known that it would eventually come to this, but I have outgrown my current tower. I have DSL, but my computer runs like dial-up. It occasionally crashes. Routinely freezes. When this happens, I'm filled with a blind, white-hot rage that has me wanting to grab a baseball bat and beat the shit out of my computer.

Computer usage should not be this way.

I really don't want to go to Best Buy for a new computer because they suck. I bought the current turd from Nebraska Furniture Mart. The only real good computer I've ever owned was built for me by a guy I was dating at the time. While he sucked in bed, he was a wizard with computers.

So, this is my call to the internets...anyone out there interested in building me a new tower? Of course I would pay for it.

This is your chance to save me from going postal on my current tower. I'm really close to doing it. You have no idea...

Why not go with a laptop? Once you sit in your favorite spot instead of humped over a computer desk, you wont ever go back. If I didnt have to work Id never leave the sofa.

these days you can never build a computer cheaper than you can buy it. the only reason to build one is to play video games or get hooked with the builder and assess his skills in bed.dude, you are getting a dell!

One word: Dell.com

I agree with meesha and midtown.

You can buy a laptop in the $400-$700 range that will be way better than your current tower.

Keep your current monitor, keyboard and mouse, hook them up to the laptop.

If you haven't experienced dual monitors with Windows XP, you haven't lived!

If I get a laptop, I'll have to mess with the whole wireless router thing and stuff. Sounds like a pain in the ass to me. Although, I'm sure I'm making it harder than it really is.

Meesha...from past experiences, I can deduce that the only button a computer nerd can locate is on a mouse.

As a self-confessed computer nerd, I'm most offended by your comment. I know where both buttons are on the mouse, the power button on the TV, the channel up and down buttons on the Tivo, the door unlock button on my car remote. I mean, those are the buttons that matter, right?

I second the laptop suggestion. They have them to the point now that you can buy one which you simply press a button, and it sets up the wireless security for you. Also, many DSL providers will sell you a modem with the wireless router built into it.

I have never had a problem hitting the right buttons. But I digress. I have both mac's and pc's. Setting up is not an issue. Building may cost your more now than getting a prebuilt. And dell has gone to crap unless you go the XPS (more money) route.

How much computer do you need. That should be the primary question. Unless you are a gamer or grafx guru, you could easily get by with a laptop and wiresless. And the previous poster is correct, a lot of them have one button set up for security. But depending on when you make your decision I couldhelp you set it up or set it up for you. I am out of town until the 29th. I have been meaning to get to a blog meet but well, I do have a mortgage to pay. :)

Let us know when you make a decision.

Yes, but smed, we sometimes meet late into the night for those meet-ups. Like, 9 p.m. even! Surely you can manage to escape the moneymaking madness for an hour to come and chat, drink, and be merry! We'd love to see ya, anyway.

Heather, I nominate the laptop as well. Let me know if you need any help with getting hooked up with a wireless device...

I've never dealt with them, but Just Cara had glowing things to say about the Laptop Squad.

You can check out her post here: http://just-cara.blogspot.com/2007/12/shout-out-laptop-squad.html

She got a "Refurb'd Dell d610 Latitude Pentium M 1.6GHz 1GRam 60GB DVD+RW WIFI) for about $400".

Well for starters, they're not called Towers anymore. CPU is the correct term!

I have a Dell and it's pretty straightforward, just tell them what you want. Although they did laugh at me when I said I wanted an A drive and they came back with, "Dude, you've still got floppys?" YES I DO. ALthough I've transferred most of them to CD's.

But my Dell is almost 4 years old and I have Broadband and it has been so slow loading docs and pics, so thanks for pointing that out. But then again, my entire building here in Hollywood has been complaining about the Internet service and that all their computers are slower too. And most of them have Macs so I think it's a trend.

I'm a computer nerd through and through, and I've had it with building systems. It doesn't really pay anymore. I just bought something really similar to this recently: http://www.buy.com/prod/hp-pavilion-slimline-s3200n-amd-athlon-64-x2-dual-core-processor-4800/q/loc/101/205611532.html

Great computer.

I use both a pc and a laptop the lap topm is much easier to use and more convient. I just basically use the PC as a file storage and back up device.

I set up my own wireless stuff. If you can read you can do it. So I guess the leaves Emawkc out.

I disagree with choosing a Dell. We have four computer, two laptops and two desktops, two Dell and two Mac's. The Apple Macs are definitely the better computers. The screens looks like premium flat screens! http://dom.sanculi.com
